I finished it only because I was obliged to do so, since it’s in my school program and it will be on my final exam who made this stupid decision anyway?

I feel sorry for the next generations who will have to suffer through this. I gave it two stars because of some beautiful descriptions, but that aside, I didn’t like this book at all. The story is about this boy who’s alone as a child, stays alone, sad when the night time comes, always a victim of everything and everyone, and finds comfort in a box full of old unvaluable things. This is literally how the whole story goes until the very end: But i’m still alone.

Ahmef of all, a real Moroccan child at the time this book pretends to be set in, was never alone. They had small “gangs” of boys playing around and having fun everywhere.

Secondly, it seems that Sefrioui wanted to sell his book to French people because Moroccan readers at the time were counted by the fingers of two handsand he got this brilliant idea: Sometimes, as a Moroccan, I l a little bit offended by some parts.

There was no development at all. Everything is the same, from page 1 to the end. I had to read the first page over and over again. It was music to my ears, a loving melody. Just one paragraph can put the whole book to shame more than the shame it’s already inno jokes. Jan 18, Meriem rated it it was ok Shelves: I had to read this last year for school.

I’ve been reading this because of my work, and let’s be honest here. I did fine in the exams, but I never looked back to reading these school stuffs, but since I started teaching, I had a night sefrikui that required me to pick up the classics. And so I did.

I must say that I was very surprised by the way an autobiographical story tries to include elements of Fantasy, and I can accept the fact that I was reading a novel about Moroccan culture that I, a Moroccan, wasn’t really updated about.

Upon finishing the book, I was indifferent to why are we allowed to read such mind you a mediocrity that deals with themes I rather want to be extinguished the belief in sorcery and such stuffs. The modern world read themes that are quite progressive, classics such as Catcher in The Rye, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, O Mice and Men just realised that we’re talking about French classes, but to hell with it, France and Morocco have better literature than this.

I know this is a long rant for such a simple “autobiographical book” but I had to write these few words. S This took me this long to read, because I only read it aloud in class. Dec 01, Ai Bougdira rated it it was ok.
